The family name of the first 5 Roman emperors. The Julius and Claudius families were both prominent Roman clans, but the first emperor, Augustus of the Julius family (reigned 27 BC - 14 AD), adopted Tiberius of the Claudius family (reigned 14-37) as his successor, and the two families were united. After Tiberius, Caligula (reigned 37-41), Claudius (reigned 41-54), and Nero (reigned 54-68) followed, but the line of emperors came to an end with Nero's suicide in 68.
