Costume Philosophy - Sartor Resartus

Costume Philosophy - Sartor Resartus

A work by British historian Thomas Carlyle. As the subtitle "The Life and Opinions of Mr. Teufelsdreck" suggests, it is a kind of symbolism written in the form of a translation and introduction of the book of a fictitious German professor. It was serialized in a magazine from 1833 to 1834, and published in Boston in the United States in 1836 and in Britain in 1838. The work is divided into two parts. The part on philosophy of clothing, as imagined from the title "Sator Risatas" (meaning "the patchwork tailor"), is a multifaceted illustration of the point that all symbols, forms, and institutions in the universe are ultimately merely temporary costumes, and that the unchanging essence lies hidden within them.

On the other hand, the novel-like part introducing the author's professor is actually Carlyle's own spiritual autobiography disguised as the professor, and the three chapters "Eternal Negation," "The Center of Indifference," and "Eternal Affirmation," which beautifully describe the suffering of the romantic soul and how to overcome it, are particularly famous. Overall, it is said to be heavily influenced by German Romanticism, especially Jean-Paul Richter.
