Etajima

Japanese: 江田島 - えたじま
Etajima

An island in Hiroshima Bay, west of Hiroshima Prefecture. It belongs to Etajima City. It is connected to Nomi Island by an isthmus called Hitonose in the southwest. The island is mountainous, consisting of granite, and has little flat land. The highest peak is Mount Furutaka (376 meters) located almost in the center of the island. It borders Kure City across Kure Bay to the east, and Hiroshima City across Ninoshima Island to the north. Etajima Bay is between the island and Nomi Island to the west, and it is connected to the open sea at Tsukumo Strait in the northwest. Settlements are scattered along the coast, and the slopes of the mountains are cultivated. In 1888 (Meiji 21), the Naval Academy was relocated from Tsukiji in Tokyo to Etajima, and from then until the end of World War II, "Etajima" became synonymous with the Naval Academy. Together with the adjacent Nomi Island, the island has an area of 91.44 square kilometers and a population of 27,031 (2010).
