Darien (English spelling)

A province in eastern Panama that borders Colombia. It is the least populated mountainous region in the Republic of Panama. The Gulf of Darien is a bay in the Caribbean Sea created by the Isthmus of Panama and Colombia, and includes the Gulf of Urabá at the back. During the Spanish conquest, the Darien region referred to the eastern end of the Isthmus of Panama, but also included the current state of Panama. Balboa set out from the colony of Darien, which was established in the Gulf of Urabá, and discovered the Pacific Ocean (1513). [Kawai Tsuneo]
