Rokugo Manzan

Japanese: 六郷満山 - ろくごうまんざん

In the Kunisaki Peninsula, Oita Prefecture, there used to be six districts in the Kunisaki (East) District. The many Tendai sect temples that were established in these districts are collectively called Rokugoyama or Rokugomanzan. In 750 (Tenpyo Shoho 2), the districts of Kunawa, Aki, and Musashi in Kunisaki District became the Himejin-fuko of Usa Hachimangu Shrine, and in 970 (Tenroku 1), if over 330 households that paid tribute to the nobility (Usa Takusenshu) were made the Mirokuji temple land of Usa Hachimangu Shrine, then all of the district except for the Kunisaki (East) District, which was under the provincial government, became the temple land of Usa Hachimangu Shrine. There have been many grass-house temples in this area since ancient times, and from around the 10th century these became mountain temples, forming what is said to be 65 temples and over 800 temples by the end of the Heian period.

大分県国東（くにさき）半島には古くは国埼(東)郡として六つの郷があった。この六郷に成立した多くの天台宗寺院を六郷山または六郷満山と総称する。750年(天平勝宝2)国埼郡来縄（くなわ）･安岐･武蔵郷内は宇佐八幡宮比咩神封戸となったが，また970年(天禄1)公家貢進の330余戸(《宇佐託宣集》)が宇佐八幡宮神宮寺の弥勒寺領とすれば，これによって国衙領国前(東)郷を除くすべては宇佐八幡宮寺領となった。この地域には古くから草堂寺院が多く，10世紀ごろからこれらは山岳寺院となり，平安末期には65ヵ寺800余といわれる院坊を形成した。
