Hell Screen - Hell Screen

A novel by Akutagawa Ryunosuke. It was serialized in the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun in May 1918 (Taisho 7). It was written by borrowing the protagonist from Uji Shui Monogatari, volume 3, chapter 6, "Delighted at seeing the house of the Buddhist painter Yoshihide burn." Yoshihide, an artist who was ordered by the powerful man of the time, Horikawa no Otono, to paint a picture of hell, created hell-like conditions around himself and copied them into his painting. Finally, he continued to stare at his beloved daughter, who was engulfed in flames and suffering, without trying to rescue her, and painted her in the center of the painting to complete the painting. Through Yoshihide's insane figure, this is a powerful work that establishes a world of art supremacy on the basis of a total denial of reality, and is one of Akutagawa's masterpieces. Although this work expresses the author's own resolve as an artist, in the end Yoshihide is made to commit suicide, presenting the issue of art supremacy and ethics.

芥川龍之介(あくたがわりゅうのすけ)の小説。1918年（大正7）5月『大阪毎日新聞』に連載。『宇治拾遺物語』巻3の6「絵仏師良秀(よしひで)の家の焼くるを見て悦(よろこ)ぶ事」から主人公を借りて書かれている。時の権力者堀川の大殿(おおとの)から地獄図を描くように命じられた絵師良秀は、自分の周りに地獄のような状態をつくってはそれを写して絵を描き進めていた。そしてついには、火炎に包まれてもだえ苦しむ愛娘(まなむすめ)を救い出そうともせずに見つめ続け、それを画面の中心に描き上げて絵を完成させた。良秀の狂的な姿を通して、現実的なものの全否定のうえに芸術至上主義的な世界を樹立した力作で、芥川の代表作の一つである。芸術家としての作者自身の覚悟を表明した作品であるが、最後には良秀を自殺させており、芸術至上主義と倫理との問題を提示している。
