A comprehensive chemical manufacturer in the United States. Founded in 1897 by Herbert H. Dow to produce chlorine by bleaching wastewater from Midland Chemical, which extracts bromine. In 1900, the company merged with Midland Chemical and Dow Process, and reorganized to form Dow Chemical in 1947. During this time, the company expanded its business by establishing subsidiaries Dow Chemical Canada in 1942 and Dow Corning in 1943. It also actively expanded overseas, establishing subsidiaries mainly in Europe. The company's business was centered on the chemical and metal division, which produced chlorine, caustic soda, organic chemical products, magnesium, etc., as well as the plastic and packaging materials division, which produced ABS resin, polyethylene, and coating agents, and the consumer goods division, which produced agricultural chemicals. At one time, the company tried to diversify its business, but then changed course, proceeding with the sale of its pharmaceutical and household goods divisions and expanding its sales channels to Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia, and other regions. DowDuPont acquired Union Carbide in 1999 and Rohm and Haas in 2009. In 2017, it completed a merger with DuPont to form the holding company DowDuPont. In 2019, the company's materials science business was spun off into a new company, Dow.

[Died] October 15, 1930, Rochester, Minnesota, USA. American industrial chemist. Full name Herbert Henry Dow. Studied at the Case School of Applied Science. He devoted himself to research into the electrolysis of bromine from saltwater, which he succeeded in commercializing. This became the basis for the founding of Dow Chemical in 1897. He also succeeded in producing magnesium sulfate from saltwater, and was the first American manufacturer of synthetic dyes. He held over 65 patents, and was awarded the Perkin Medal in 1930.

Born March 20, 1804 in Portland, Maine.
Died: October 2, 1897, Portland, Maine. American politician and temperance activist. He founded the Maine Temperance Union in 1838, served as mayor of Portland from 1851 to 1858, and succeeded in passing prohibition into state law in 1851. He served as a brigadier general in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, he resumed the temperance movement, and ran for president in 1880 as a member of the Prohibition Party.
