A representative scholarly monk of the mid-to-late Kamakura period. Representative of the Kegon sect of Todaiji Temple (Nara City). Son of Fujiwara Takakane. Entered Todaiji Temple at age 13 in 1214. Studied Kegon, Inmeigaku, Tendai, Hosso and other sects. In 1222 he attended Gosai-e (an annual Imperial Court event held for seven days from January 8th to pray for national peace and bountiful harvests), and in 1241 he became Gon Risshi, in 1243 Gon Shosozu, in 1244 Gon Daisozu, head priest of Sonsho-in Temple at Todaiji Temple, and head of the Kegon sect. In 1260 he was promoted to betto of Todaiji Temple. In 1269 he became Gon Sojo. 鎌倉中・後期の代表的な学僧。東大寺(奈良市)華厳宗の代表者。藤原隆兼の子。建保2(1214)年に13歳で東大寺に入寺する。華厳をはじめ因明学,天台,法相などを研学。貞応1(1222)年御斎会(宮中の年中行事で1月8日から7日間,国家安寧・五穀成就を祈る儀式)に参じ,仁治2(1241)年権律師,寛元1(1243)年には権少僧都,同4年権大僧都,東大寺尊勝院院主,華厳宗貫首となった。文応1(1260)年東大寺別当にまでなった。文永6(1269)年には権僧正となる。弥勒信仰の信者でもあった。<著作>『弥勒如来感応抄』『日本高僧伝要文抄』<参考文献>平岡定海『東大寺宗性上人の研究並史料』
