...For wool over 20 cm long, a sliver is made using a preparer (gill) rather than a card (wool spinning machine). Cap spinning frames are also widely used for spinning wool yarn, and have a structure in which an iron cap is placed on the top of a spindle with a wooden tube inserted into it. The drafted sliver passes through the outside of the cap and falls downward, where it is twisted as it rotates around the cap.

The raw material for silk spinning is by-product silk from sericulture and silk reeling waste. After the sericin (the protein that makes up silk thread) is removed by scouring, the silk is opened (beaten into cocoons and opened), combed with a carding machine, and then made into slivers with a rowing machine or comber.
