…American ecologist. Born in New York State. He served as a professor at the University of Illinois for many years, and was the first president of the Ecological Society of America. In his early years, he studied the changes in distribution of beetles and fish associated with plant succession, emphasizing the interrelationships between the environment and living organisms. He also used thermo-hygrostats to investigate the relationship between insect growth and survival and temperature and humidity, and attempted to predict changes in distribution and abundance. Based on these studies, he wrote Laboratory and Field Ecology (1929) and other works, contributing to the development of so-called individual ecology. In his later years, he began to emphasize interrelationships between species within biological communities, and together with botanist FE Clements, he published Bio-ecology (1939), which took this position. … From [Ecosystem]…This idea was further developed by American FE Clements. Clements, a plant ecologist, started working with animal ecologist VE Shelford from around 1930 to pioneer a new field of ecology called bioecology, which does not separate plants and animals. They named a regional unit of a biological community a biome, and considered it to be a highly advanced organism, just like an individual organism. … *Some of the terminology that mentions "Shelford, VE" is listed below. … … ※「Shelford,V.E.」
