An old town in the northwest of Lake Biwa, Takashima District, Shiga Prefecture. The town's center is Imazu, a lakeside town that developed as a junction between the Wakasa Highway and boat traffic on the lake, and the Kosei Line runs through it. Rice is the main crop, along with vegetables and fruit. Aebano, on the alluvial plateau, was an army training ground from the mid-Meiji period onwards, and is now a training ground for the Self-Defense Forces. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In January 2005, it merged with Makino Town, Azumigawa Town, Takashima Town, Shinasahi Town, and Kutsuki Village in Takashima District to become a city, Takashima City. Area: 122.74 km2 .
