Joseph Albers

American painter. Also known as Albers. Born in Bottrop, Germany. After studying at art schools in Berlin and Essen, he graduated from the Bauhaus and became a Meister (teacher). He was influenced by Cubism, Constructivism, and the group "The Bridge." In 1933, he moved to the United States and taught at Black Mountain College and Yale University. He experimented with both improvised and planned methods, and explored color expression within combinations of basic shapes based on the idea of ​​visual relativity. His representative work is the series "In Praise of the Square." In addition to painting, he also produced graphic art, glass, brick, and bronze works. He died in New Haven, Connecticut.

アメリカの画家。アルベルスともよばれる。ドイツのボトロップに生まれる。ベルリン、エッセンの美術学校に学んだのち、バウハウスを卒業し、マイスター(教師)となる。キュビスム、構成主義、またグループ「橋」の影響を受ける。1933年アメリカに渡り、ブラック・マウンテン大学、エール大学で教える。即興的あるいは計画的な方法による実験を行うが、視覚の相対性という考えにたって、基本的な形体の組合せのなかでの色彩表現を探求した。代表作に『正方形礼賛』の連作がある。また絵画のほかに、グラフィック・アート、ガラス、ブリック、ブロンズなどを用いた作品を制作している。コネティカット州ニュー・ヘブンで没す。
