A province in western Canada. It is located at the western edge of the prairies. Its western border is the main watershed of the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Plains to the east are a world-famous producer of spring wheat. Since the discovery of oil in the provincial capital, Edmonton, in 1947, it has attracted attention as a treasure trove of natural resources. Edmonton and Calgary, Canada's second most populous city, are the main producers of crude oil (including oil sands), coal, and natural gas, and since 1974 the petrochemical industry has developed dramatically.
