...A. Warburg, a wealthy German art historian, had a particular interest in the traditions of ancient art, and in 1905 established a library in Hamburg with a rich collection of books on the subject. It eventually developed into an institute (1921) with his friend F. Saxl as its director, and Panofsky, Cassirer and others became involved with the institute, which came to be regarded as a major center for Renaissance studies.
