A trend in painting that became mainstream in America for about ten years after World War II, corresponding to the European movement of Informel (lyric abstraction). The term was first used by critic Rosenberg in an essay in 1952. It originally came from Pollock, who would lay a large canvas on the floor and literally step inside to paint, and in the narrow sense it is used exclusively to refer to his paintings. In a broader sense, it also includes Robert Motherwell (1915-91), Franz Kline (1910-62), Georges Mathieu (1921- ), and Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923- ).
