1856‐1927 A leading proponent of cultural Zionism. Born Asher Hirsch Ginsberg in the Kiev region of Russia, he lived in Odessa under the pseudonym Ahad Ha'am, or "One of the People." He advocated the creation of Palestine as the spiritual and cultural center of the Jewish people, and was critical of the political Zionism of Herzl and others, who sought to realize a Jewish state as a mere political organization.
