A bird of the flycatcher family. The wingspan of males is 6.5cm, and that of females is about 5.5cm. The back is olive brown, and the underside is grayish white. It is found in Japan, the Korean Peninsula, eastern China, the Philippines, and other areas. As a migratory bird, it nests in mountain scrub forests and thickets in summer, and descends to the plains in winter. From early spring, males are well known for their song "hohokekyo." They build urn-shaped nests out of leaves such as silver grass and lay dark reddish brown eggs. They are sometimes parasitized by lesser cuckoos and become foster parents. They mainly eat insects, and sometimes berries. Their single song "cha, cha" is called a "whispering song," and their sharp song "kikikikikikkyokikkyo" is called a "valley-crossing" song. Along with the blue-and-white flycatcher and the Japanese robin, they are one of the three songbirds of Japan. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
