A Russian fortress located about 450 km upstream from Blagoveshchensk on the north bank of the Amur River (Heilongjiang). The area is part of today's Amur Oblast in the Russian Federation. The Qing dynasty called the area Yakssha. In 1651, Russia built a fortress here as an advance base for the development of eastern Siberia. Since then, tensions arose between Russia and the Qing over the ownership of the Amur coastal region, and finally armed conflict broke out between the two countries twice in 1685-86. Russia was defeated and Albazin Castle was evacuated, but the land returned to Russian possession by the Treaty of Nerchinsk in 1689. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
