1603‐75 A Polish physician and naturalist, his English name was John Jonston. He studied botany and medicine at the universities of Torun, Prussia, and St. Andrews, Scotland. He was a professor at the medical faculty of Leiden University from 1640 to 1655. He retired in 1655 to become a writer. During the Edo period, a Dutch translation of Jonston's Illustrated Guide to Birds, Beasts, Insects, and Fish (1660) was imported to Japan. Noro Genjo, a medical officer of the shogunate, was an interpreter for a tsutsuji (Japanese interpreter), and asked about the contents of the book, and in 1741 (Kanpo 1) he compiled a volume called A Comprehensive Guide to Dutch Birds, Beasts, Insects, and Fish.
