Shiojiri

Japanese:
Shiojiri

A collection of essays from the mid-Edo period. More than 170 volumes are thought to remain. Written by Amano Nobukage (1663-1733). Written between 1697 (Genroku 10) and 1733 (Kyoho 18), the original text is said to span 1,000 volumes. The author was a samurai of the Owari clan and was known as a learned Japanese scholar. His rationalistic academic style greatly influenced contemporary Owari (Aichi Prefecture) scholars and writers such as Yoshimi Yoshikazu, as well as Hirata Atsutane and others. This book is a compilation of excerpts from a wide range of Japanese and Chinese classics, including court etiquette and customs, as well as the author's own observations and experiences, which he personally examines and comments on. It is notable for its rich content as well as its empirical methodology. As the author himself said, "It is not for people to see, but merely to keep in reserve in my leisure time," the drafts were scattered across scraps of paper and other materials, and they have been so widely scattered that no complete copy exists. However, in 1782 (Tenmei 2) a 100-volume edition was compiled for publication by Nishimura Tsuneyoshi of a Nagoya bookshop, and several other copies have been handed down.
