Blue sardine - Aoiwashi

Japanese: 青鰯 - あおいわし

...Perhaps because the swords were often burned in oil and turned black, the rusty, dull swords came to be mockingly called "red sardines." In cookbooks, the term "blue sardines" appears, but this refers to blue sardines that are lightly salted. Currently, sardines and round herrings are processed into dried fish such as eye sashimi, whole dried fish, and mirin dried fish, as well as canned sardines in oil.
