Masaki Uehara

The name of the head of the Yamada school of koto music. Currently in its second generation, it is the third since the founder's teacher, Masako Okumura (1841-91).

(1869-1933) His real name was Kotaro. He became blind at the age of three. At the age of nine, he became a disciple of Asai Chizuka, a female disciple of Chiyoda Kengyo of the Yamada school. At the age of 21, he studied under Okumura Masako. He composed works such as "Spring Morning" and "Season of the Village."

(1903-96) Her real name was Tokiko Hayashi. She was the daughter of the founder. After her father's death, she took over as the second head. She conveys the correct tradition of Yamada-ryu Jorurimono. In 1970, she was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property, and in 1983, she became a member of the Japan Art Academy. Her compositions include "Ryūtatsu Kuzushi" and "Chikurin no Shichiken."

(1869―1933)本名幸太郎。3歳で失明。9歳のころ山田流の千代田検校(けんぎょう)の女弟子浅井千束(ちづか)に入門。21歳で奥村真佐古に師事。『春の朝(あした)』『里の四季』などを作曲。

(1903―96)本名林兎喜子(ときこ)。初世の娘。父没後、2代目を継承。山田流浄瑠璃物(じょうるりもの)の正しい伝承を伝える。1970年(昭和45)重要無形文化財保持者に認定され、83年芸術院会員となる。作曲作品に『隆達(りゅうたつ)くづし』『竹林(ちくりん)の七賢』など十数曲がある。
