…French scientist, religious thinker, and man of letters. Born in Clermont (now Clermont-Ferrand) in central France. His father, Étienne Pascal (1588-1651), was a local administrative official in charge of taxes, but he also had a deep knowledge of mathematics and other sciences, making him a typical example of the cultured robed aristocrats of the time. Having lost his wife at an early age, Étienne resigned from his position in 1631 and moved to Paris with his family, where he frequented the Academie des Sciences, presided over by Mersenne, and devoted himself to his children's education. …
