A city in northwestern Ethiopia. It is located at an altitude of 2,250 meters on the Ethiopian Plateau. It has a population of 112,249 (1994), 400,555 (2019 estimate). It was the capital of the Gondar dynasty of the Ethiopian Kingdom in the 17th to 19th centuries, and the castle built by King Fasilides in 1632 still remains. In 1954, Ethiopia's first medical school (Public Health University) was opened here. It is a distribution center for agricultural products from the surrounding area, and industries such as leather, metal, and ivory work are carried out. Mount Ras Dashan (4,533 meters) is located in the northeast, and Lake Tana is located in the south. In 1979, Fasil Gebi, the ruins of the Gondar dynasty, and the Gondar region were registered as World Heritage sites (World Cultural Heritage).
