A town in Suwa District, eastern Nagano Prefecture. It is located in the highlands at the southwest foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains, and is served by the Chuo Main Line and the Chuo Expressway. It is known as a summer resort, and produces rice, vegetables, and flowers (persimmons). Area: 144.76 km2 . Population: 15,338 (2010).
