Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

A syndrome first reported in 1955 by R.M. Zollinger and EH Ellison. It is a condition in which pancreatic tumors produce excessive amounts of gastrin (a gastrointestinal hormone that secretes gastric juice), resulting in the development of multiple, difficult-to-treat peptic ulcers. Gastrin-producing tumors and hyperplasia in the stomach wall and duodenal wall can also cause this syndrome. High levels of highly acidic gastric juice are secreted, and symptoms include severe abdominal pain, hematemesis, bloody stool, vomiting, and severe diarrhea. Fasting blood gastrin levels can reach more than 10 times those of normal people. Treatment requires removal of the tumor.

R.M.ゾリンジャーと E.H.エリソンによって 1955年に初めて報告された症候群。膵臓腫瘍からガストリン (胃液分泌作用のある消化管ホルモン) が過剰につくりだされ，治療困難な消化性潰瘍が多発する状態をいう。胃壁や十二指腸壁などに生じるガストリン産生腫瘍や過形成も，この症候群の原因となる。胃液は酸度の高いものが大量に分泌され，激しい腹痛，吐血や下血，嘔吐，重症の下痢などの症状を伴う。空腹時の血中ガストリン値が正常者の約 10倍以上にも達する。治療は腫瘍の摘出が必要である。
