Shiojiri Pass - Shiojiri Pass

A pass in central Nagano Prefecture that borders the Suwa Basin and Matsumoto Basin. There are two passes, the new and the old, with the old pass at an elevation of 1,055m and the new pass at 999m. The old pass was on the Nakasendo road in the early modern period, and its name comes from the fact that it is the end point of the "Salt Road" that runs from the Pacific coast through Kofu, and the "Salt Road" that runs from the Japan Coast through the Chikuni Kaido. The surrounding area is called Onodate Park, and has a good view of the Northern Alps, and the Nakasendo road is a hiking course. The new pass was opened in 1889, and offers a good view of Lake Suwa below, Kirigamine, Yatsugatake, Mt. Fuji, and the night view of the cities of Suwa, Okaya, and Shimo-Suwa. National Route 20 passes through it. The Chuo Expressway passes through a tunnel on the north side, and the Okaya Interchange is on the east side. It belongs to the Enreiojo Prefectural Natural Park.

長野県中部，諏訪盆地と松本盆地を境する峠。新，旧2つの峠があり，旧峠は標高 1055m，新峠は 999m。旧峠は近世中山道の峠で，太平洋岸から甲府を経る「塩の道」と，日本海岸から千国街道を通る「塩の道」の末端にあたるところからこの名称が生じた。付近を御野立公園と呼び，北アルプス方面の眺めがよく，中山道はハイキングコースになっている。新峠は 1889年に開削され，眼下の諏訪湖をはじめ霧ヶ峰，八ヶ岳，富士山，あるいは諏訪，岡谷，下諏訪の市街の夜景など眺望がよい。国道 20号線が通る。北側を中央自動車道がトンネルで通過し，東側に岡谷インターチェンジがある。塩嶺王城県立自然公園に属する。
