Jerónimo de Jesús
?‐1601
In Spanish, his name is Jerónimo de Jesús. He was a Portuguese Franciscan priest who was active in the Spanish world. He came to Japan in 1594 (Bunroku 3) and preached in Nagasaki and Kyoto. He was exiled to Manila after the martyrdom of the 26 Martyrs. He returned to Japan in 1598 (Keicho 3) and went into hiding. After the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he met Tokugawa Ieyasu, who wanted to trade with the Philippines and Mexico, and acted as a mediator in the negotiations. In May 1699, he built the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Edo, which marked the beginning of the spread of Christianity in the Kanto region. In 1600, he traveled to Manila as an envoy for Ieyasu, and returned to Japan the following year. He met Ieyasu before dying in October of the same year.
