Although it is difficult to give a strict definition, it refers to literary works that evoke a certain emotion (rasa) in the reader, have a style (rīti) with a specific characteristic (guna), and are decorated with complex rhetoric (alaṁkāra). There are some restrictions on the content, so the emphasis tends to be on form. The origin of kāvya is generally said to be the great epic poem Ramayana, but after this great epic poem various types of works were created, such as lyric poetry, epic poetry, drama, fantasy novels, tales, and fables, and this led to a remarkable development in the theory of poetry, rhetoric, and drama.
