Kazutaka Kikawada

Manager and financial figure. Born in Yanagawa-cho, Fukushima Prefecture (now Date City) as the third son of a doctor. Graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1926 (Taisho 15), he joined Tokyo Electric Light Co., Ltd. After Kanto Electric Power Co., Ltd. was established in 1942 (Showa 17), he transferred to the company and served as Secretary Section Chief and Labor Department Director. After the war, in 1946 (Showa 21), he became Managing Director. In 1951, Tokyo Electric Power Co., Ltd. was created as a result of the reorganization of the electric power industry, and he became Director of Sales Department on the Board of Directors, President in 1986, Chairman in 1971, and retired as Advisor in 1971. During this time, he consolidated the management foundation of TEPCO, and in 1989, he became Chairman of the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan, playing an active role as an industry leader, and creating an era after Yasuzaemon Matsunaga. He also joined the Japan Business Association in 1955, and became the association's sole executive director in 1963 (effectively becoming chairman, resigning in 1975). He was known as an advocate of "neoliberalism," which advocates harmony between business and society, and was one of the theoretical leaders in the business world.

経営者、財界人。福島県梁川(やながわ)町（現伊達(だて)市）で医家の三男に生まれる。1926年（大正15）東京帝国大学経済学部卒業と同時に東京電燈(でんとう)入社。42年（昭和17）関東配電設立後、同社に転じ秘書課長、労務部長歴任。戦後の46年（昭和21）常務。51年電力再編成で生まれた東京電力で取締役営業部長、61年社長、71年会長、71年相談役に退く。この間、東電の経営基盤を固めるとともに、64年電気事業連合会会長に就任し、業界リーダーとしても活躍し、松永安左ヱ門以後の一時代を築く。また、55年経済同友会入りし、63年一人制の同会代表幹事となり（事実上の会長、75年辞任）、企業と社会の調和を説く「新自由主義」の論客として知られ、財界の一方の理論的リーダーでもあった。
