Wood moth - Cossus vicarius
An insect of the Cossidae family of the Lepidoptera order. Its wingspan is 4-5cm. Both the body and wings are black-brown like bark, and the forewings have numerous fine black and wavy lines. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu and in China. Adults appear in summer and fly to lights. The larvae dig tunnels in various trees and feed inside. The Cossidae family is a small family, and seven species are known in Japan. The largest of these is the large Cossus , with a wingspan of 6-7.5cm. Its coloring and markings are very similar to those of the Cossidae.

鱗翅目ボクトウガ科の昆虫。翅の開張4~5cm。体,翅とも樹皮のような黒褐色で,前翅にこまかい黒線や波状線が無数にある。北海道から九州までと中国に分布する。成虫は夏に出現し,灯火に飛来する。幼虫は各種の樹木にトンネルを掘って,内部を食べる。ボクトウガ科Cossidaeは小さな科で,日本には7種知られている。そのうちの最大種はオオボクトウC.cossusで,翅の開張6~7.5cm。色彩や斑紋はボクトウガとよく似ている。
