1815‐69 A politician from the Tanzimat period (1839-76) of the Ottoman Empire. After graduating from Turkey's first medical school (established in 1827), he was active as a diplomat, and was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, and then Grand Vizier in 1861. He continued to hold important positions thereafter, and together with Ālī Paşa (1815-71), he dominated the political world after the death of Mustafa Reşit Paşa. In 1867, he accompanied Sultan Abdülaziz on a tour of Europe. He fell ill after returning to Japan and died in Nice, where he was recuperating.
