Norenwake (opening a business) - Norenwake

Japanese:
Norenwake (opening a business) - Norenwake
In a merchant's house, a servant is allowed to have a separate house. From the 17th century onwards, it became common for merchants and craftsmen to hang a noren (a curtain) with a design of the store name, product, trademark, etc., on the eaves of their houses. Merchants and craftsmen began to place importance on noren when a family business, which had specific business rights and skills, was established. In order to sustain a business that was recognized as a family business, masters and servants began to maintain the business with the awareness of a fictitious family relationship, and when the business expanded, business rights were shared, known as noren wake.
