The acids formed by the hydration of diphosphorus pentoxide (P 2 O 5) , namely orthophosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ) , pyrophosphate (H 4 P 2 O 7 ) , and metaphosphoric acid (HPO 3 ) , are collectively referred to as phosphoric acid, but orthophosphoric acid is usually referred to simply as phosphoric acid. Orthophosphoric acid has been known for a long time and is one of the most important phosphorus compounds. Organophosphate compounds are important biologically; for example, phosphate esters of sucrose are involved in photosynthesis, nucleic acids contain phosphate esters, and phosphoric acid is involved in energy metabolism in living organisms (phosphate cycle).
