When a king's vitality weakens due to illness or old age, he is forced to die by forced death or suicide, as determined by tradition. Many kings were considered to have the character of a "divine king," controlling natural phenomena such as rainfall and the movement of the seasons, responsible for the fertility of the land, and important influence on preventing disasters, the fertility of the land, and the prosperity of the people. For this reason, kings were required to be full of vitality. This custom was taken up by JG Frazer in "The Golden Bough," and he gives many examples. It is common in Africa, for example, among the Shiluk people of eastern Sudan, the Nyoro people of Uganda, the Konde people north of Lake Nyassa, and the Shona people of South Africa.
