It is a private institution. In 1910 (Meiji 43), at the World Missionary Congress of six Protestant denominations held in Edinburgh, England, a proposal was made to establish a top educational institution based on Christianity in Asia. In 1918 (Taisho 7), Tokyo Woman's Christian University was established with donations from American and Canadian believers. The first president was Nitobe Inazo, and the second president was a Japanese educator, Yasui Tetsu. In an era when the mainstream of women's education was the principle of being a good wife and wise mother, the university's founding spirit was liberal education based on Christianity (a free arts and sciences education that liberates people from all constraints). In 1948 (Showa 23), it became a new university under the new system. As of 2010 (Heisei 22), it has the Faculty of Contemporary Liberal Arts, which consists of four departments: Humanities, International Sociology, Human Sciences, and Mathematics, and the Graduate Schools of Letters, Science, Contemporary Culture, and Human Sciences. The school's motto is "All things true" (Quaecunque sunt vera), a line from the Book of Philippians in the New Testament, and it is dedicated to providing higher education for women that emphasizes the tradition of academics. It is located at 2-6-1 Zenpukuji, Suginami-ku, Tokyo. [Kitamura Kazuyuki] [References] | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
