Born: circa 1829. Nodyong Canyon, Arizona Died: February 17, 1908. Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Chief of the Chiricahua Apache tribe. His Indian name was Goyasray. He fought stubbornly in Arizona and New Mexico, and is known as the "last Apache chief." He was captured several times by the federal army that was dispatched after 1876, and repeatedly escaped, but in 1886 he and 24 other warriors were surrounded by 5,000 army soldiers and several thousand militia under the command of Brigadier General N. Miles, and surrendered at Sierra Madre. He was sent to Fort Sill in 1894, and died as a prisoner of war.
