Jamestown (English spelling)

Jamestown (English spelling)
The first British colony in North America was founded in May 1607 by the Virginia Company under a charter granted by King James I of England. It is located near the mouth of the James River in present-day Virginia. It was named after King James I. In 1619, the first representative assembly in America was held here, and in the same year, 20 Africans brought by a Dutch ship were traded for the first time. At first, there was a peaceful relationship with the Powhatan Indians who lived in the surrounding area, symbolized by the marriage of Chief Powhatan's daughter Pocahontas to colonist John Rolfe. However, in 1622, unable to bear the encroachment of their territory, the Indians rose up in a major uprising, causing great damage to the colony, and thereafter the state of war continued. With the development of tobacco cultivation, it prospered as the center of the Virginia colony, but suffered two major fires in the late 17th century, and declined after the colonial administration was moved to Middle Plantation (now Williamsburg) in 1699. Since 1934, conservation work has been carried out on the ruins, and today it is a national historic park.
