A psychiatric term. It refers to the perception of an object differently than it actually is, such as when a cloud in the sky looks like the face of a great monk, or a stain on an old wall looks like an animal. It occurs when consciousness is clear or barely impaired, the critical ability is maintained, and the person knows that what is actually a cloud or a stain is a psychiatric disorder. It is often experienced during febrile illnesses, but can also occur during delirium and drug intoxication such as LSD.
