Croydon (English spelling)

It is one of the 33 districts that make up Greater London in the southeast of England, United Kingdom. It is a borough that belongs to Outer London, and is located in the south of Greater London. It was once a suburban green belt, but after World War II it was developed into residential areas, and is now mainly a residential suburb of London. Industries such as scientific instruments, engines, and electrical machinery are also carried out there. The central area has undergone large-scale redevelopment since 1956, and it is now the largest shopping and business district in the south of Greater London. The former summer palace of the Archbishop of Canterbury and St. John's Cathedral are located within the borough. Area: 87 ^km2 . Population: 330,587 (2001).

イギリス，イングランド南東部，グレーターロンドンを構成する 33地区の一つ。外部ロンドンに属する区で，グレーターロンドンの南部に位置する。かつては郊外緑地帯であったが，第2次世界大戦後，宅地化が進み，おもにロンドンの郊外住宅地となっている。科学器具，エンジン，電機などの工業も行なわれる。また中央部一帯は 1956年以降大規模な再開発が進められ，グレーターロンドン南部で最大のショッピング・ビジネス街となっている。区内にはカンタベリー大主教のかつての夏の宮殿や聖ジョン聖堂がある。面積 87km²。人口 33万587（2001）。
