It is one of the 33 districts that make up Greater London in the southeast of England, United Kingdom. It is a borough that belongs to Outer London, and is located in the south of Greater London. It was once a suburban green belt, but after World War II it was developed into residential areas, and is now mainly a residential suburb of London. Industries such as scientific instruments, engines, and electrical machinery are also carried out there. The central area has undergone large-scale redevelopment since 1956, and it is now the largest shopping and business district in the south of Greater London. The former summer palace of the Archbishop of Canterbury and St. John's Cathedral are located within the borough. Area: 87 km2 . Population: 330,587 (2001).
