King of England (reigned 1685-1688). Son of Charles I. Temporarily exiled during the Puritan Revolution, he returned to England at the Restoration. As a Catholic, there were movements in Parliament opposed to his succession to the throne, but he suppressed these and succeeded his brother Charles II to the throne. He came into conflict with Parliament over his attempt to implement dictatorial rule by restoring Catholicism and establishing a standing army, and went into exile in France during the Glorious Revolution of 1688. With the support of Louis XIV, he attempted to make a comeback with his supporters (the Jacobites), but failed. →Related articles House of Stuart | Mary [II] | Duke of Monmouth Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
