A peninsula in the state of Sucre in northeastern Venezuela. It extends eastward, facing the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Gulf of Paria to the south. Topographically, it corresponds to the part of the branch of the Mérida mountain range, which constitutes the northern end of the Andes mountain range, that extends eastward in northern Venezuela and protrudes toward Trinidad, and continues to the northern mountain range of Trinidad through the Dragon's Mouth Strait. In 1498, Columbus first reached South America during his third voyage, and this is where he landed. [Yanagimachi Harumi]
