An evergreen tree of the family Carpinaceae rarely found in the coastal waters of the Ryukyu Islands, reaching a height of 10 m and a diameter of 20 cm. Young branches have thick thorns. The leathery leaves are alternate, have short petioles, are ovate or lanceolate, have three midribs, are 3-10 cm long, are pointed at both ends, and have blunt sawtooth edges, but in older trees they are completely gone, have a glossy surface, and the midrib and veinlets protrude on both sides. The flowers are bisexual, borne in axillary racemes, about 6 mm in diameter. The sepals and petals are pale yellow, with 5-6 in number. There are many stamens.

琉球諸島の近海地にまれに見られるイイギリ科の常緑小高木で，高さ10m，直径20cmに達する。若枝に太いとげがある。革質の葉は互生し，短い葉柄を有し，卵形または披針形，3主脈があり，長さ3～10cm，両端はとがり，ふちには鈍鋸歯があるが老木では全くなくなり，表面に光沢があり，中肋と細脈は両面に突出する。花は両性，腋生（えきせい）の総状花序につき，径6mmくらい。萼片と花弁は5～6枚で淡黄色。おしべは多数。
