Jerboa (jump rat)

Japanese: トビネズミ(跳鼠) - トビネズミ（英語表記）jerboa

A general term for mammals of the Dipodidae family of the Rodent order. They are similar in appearance to pocket rodents such as kangaroo rats, but are a completely different group. They are found from the Sahara through Russia, southwestern Asia, and Central Asia to the Gobi Desert and Siberia. Body length 3.6-27 cm, tail length 7-31 cm. Their hind legs are long, suitable for jumping, and their metatarsals are extremely long and fused to form a single tubular bone. Their hind legs are 1.8-9.8 cm long, but their forelimbs are short.

齧歯（げつし）目トビネズミ科Dipodidaeの哺乳類の総称。カンガルーネズミなどのポケットネズミ科のものに外形がよく似るが，まったく系統の異なるグループ。サハラからロシア，アジア南西部，中央アジアを経てゴビ砂漠，シベリアまでに分布。体長3.6～27cm，尾長7～31cm。跳躍に適して後肢が長く，中足骨は著しく長く癒合（ゆごう）して1本の管骨となる。後足長は1.8～9.8cmに達するが，前肢は短小。
