British architect. Born in London. After graduating from South Kensington School of Art, he studied architecture under E. George. He became independent in 1889. In his early years, he designed country houses (typical British detached suburban homes) such as Heathcote (1906). He eventually changed his style to one that combined various classical styles, and became one of Britain's leading architects with designs such as the British Embassy in the United States (1928), the urban planning of New Delhi, and the Viceroy's House of India (1930). After his death, he was poorly regarded during the era dominated by functionalist architecture, but his work was reevaluated around 1970 with the rise of postmodernist thought.
