Hexacyano complexes of iron in the oxidation states II and III, as well as cyanide complexes containing both irons, are known. [Hexacyanoferrate(II)] Chemical formula: H 4 [Fe(CN) 6 ]. Commonly known as ferrocyanic acid. When concentrated hydrochloric acid is added to an aqueous solution of potassium ferricyanide (II), cooled, and ether is added, an ether adduct is obtained, which is then heated to 80-90°C in a dry hydrogen stream to obtain ferrocyanic acid. Colorless crystalline powder. Relatively stable in dry air. Decomposes when exposed to moisture, heat, or light, gradually turning green.
