Agui-in Temple

Japanese: 安居院 - あぐい

This is a village temple of Toto Chikurin-in Temple on Mount Hiei. It was located in what is now Omiya-dori Kamitachiurikita, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City. From the end of the Heian period, father and son Choken and Shokaku preached here, forming a representative school of chanting called the Agoin school. As the head priest of Enryaku-ji Temple, it flourished by strengthening ties with the imperial court, aristocrats, and samurai, but was not rebuilt after it was burned down during the Onin War.

比叡山東塔竹林院の里坊(さとぼう)。現在の京都市上京区大宮通上立売北にあった。平安時代末期からここを根拠地として澄憲・聖覚父子が説教を行い，安居院流という唱導の代表的な一流をなした。延暦寺門跡の院家として朝廷・貴族・武家との結び付きを強めて栄えたが，応仁・文明の乱で焼けた後は再興されなかった。
