Capuchin Order (English: Ordo Fratrum Minorum Capuccinorum, Latin)

It is one of the three independent sects of the Franciscan Order, a Christian religious order created by St. Francis of Assisi. It was founded in 1525 by Italian priest Matteo da Basio, and became completely independent in the 17th century. It aims to strictly follow the rules established by Francis, and places emphasis on prayer and missionary work. Its lifestyle is strict, and its church is extremely simple. Because of their beards and long hoods, they came to be called Capuchin monks (the etymology of which means "hood"). They came to Japan after World War II (1947), and opened a monastery in Okinawa.

アッシジの聖フランチェスコがつくったキリスト教修道会フランシスコ会の3独立分派の一つ。1525年イタリア人司祭マテオ・ダ・バシオによって創立され、17世紀に入って完全に独立した。フランチェスコの定めた会則を厳密に守ることを目ざし、祈りと宣教を旨とする。その生活態度は厳格で、聖堂もきわめて簡素である。ひげをはやし長い頭巾(ずきん)をかぶるその風貌(ふうぼう)から、カプチン（語源は「頭巾」の意）僧とよばれるようになった。日本にも第二次世界大戦後（1947）渡来し、沖縄に修道院を開いている。
