An island in the southwest of Yamaguchi Prefecture, at the west entrance of the Kanmon Strait. It is part of Shimonoseki City. Its area is 0.69 square kilometers. According to the Toyoura Village and Clan Details (1858) from the early modern period, it was a semi-agricultural, semi-fishing village with 58 houses, 335 people, and 54 boats, and a battery was built on it at the end of the Edo period. The plateau-like island is home to the Mutsushima Lighthouse (an important cultural property) built in 1871 (Meiji 4) and a group of fuel tanks, making it a key location for maritime traffic. Winter cabbage and summer carrots are its specialties, and in recent years floriculture has been on the rise. The mica basalt at the high point in the center of the island is a national natural monument. There is a regular ferry service from Takezaki Port. Population 114 (2009).
