Caledonian Canal - Caledonian Canal

Caledonian Canal - Caledonian Canal

A canal in northern Scotland, UK. It connects the Bay of Murray, which is connected to the North Sea, with the Lochs Ness, Oich, Loch and Ely, which are in a row in the Caledonian Rift Valley, and reaches the Bay of Rennie, which leads to the Atlantic Ocean. It is 97.3 km long (35.4 km of which are excavated canals and 61.9 km of which are lake water use canals), 5.2 m deep, and has 27 locks. Construction began in 1803 during the Napoleonic Wars as a national project to prevent damage from commerce raiding by French privateers. It opened in 1822, but only small ships such as fishing boats could pass through, and it was not effective enough, so it was renovated from 1842 to 1847 to allow ships up to 500 tons to pass through. Since 1963, it has been managed by British Waterways and designated as a transportation waterway.
